A 19-year-old behavioral therapist who dedicated her life to helping children with autism has been tragically killed in a shooting that authorities are now linking to her friend’s boyfriend.
Dre’Ana Shellman was riding as a passenger in a car in Atlanta on July 6 when police say Amari Haugabook, also 19, opened fire into the vehicle. Shellman later died at the hospital.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, Haugabook was arrested on July 23 in connection with the shooting. Officials did not immediately announce formal charges but said they are forthcoming.
Court documents obtained by local outlets reportedly show that Haugabook had allegedly attacked his girlfriend—Shellman’s friend—just a month before the shooting. He is accused of bear-spraying her, taking her phone when she tried to call 911, and spitting on her, according to arrest warrants reviewed by 11 Alive. Those charges include armed robbery, aggravated assault, simple battery, and hindering an emergency call.
On the day of the shooting, Shellman was riding with Haugabook’s girlfriend when he allegedly fired into the car, reports say.
Now, loved ones are remembering Shellman as a bright light who was devoted to her younger brother and had an exceptional gift for makeup artistry, hairstyling, and eyelash extensions. Her family told local news she “lit up” every room she entered.
