In a heartbreaking case that has shaken the Cape Coral community, an 18-year-old has been sentenced to life in prison for the tragic shooting of a 15-year-old girl, Kayla Rincon-Miller, following a night out at the movies. The incident, described as a “random act of violence,” unfolded on March 17, 2024, when Kayla was out with friends.
Thomas Stein, who was just 16 at the time, was reportedly driving with his friend Christopher Horne Jr. in a car rented by his mother. The duo was allegedly on a mission to find vehicles to burglarize, cruising through parking lots of local theaters. Their path crossed with Kayla and her friends, who were leaving a film and heading for food.
In a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 turn of events, Stein and Horne decided to target the girls. As they drove past, they reportedly flashed their high beams, and in a moment of chaos, Stein shot Kayla in the chest before fleeing the scene. Despite her friends’ desperate attempts to save her, Kayla was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Authorities revealed that Kayla did not know her assailant, a sentiment echoed by her friends. Lisa Greenberg from the Cape Coral Police Department characterized the incident as a senseless act of violence that has left a lasting impact on the community.
Court documents indicate that Stein had a history of felony convictions related to vehicle break-ins. His case, along with Horne’s, was moved from juvenile to adult court, allowing for more severe penalties. A grand jury indicted both on charges of first-degree felony murder. On July 10, Stein was sentenced to life in prison for murder, alongside an additional 15 years for attempted robbery, with the sentences set to run consecutively.
In a poignant moment, Louann Dejaie, a friend of Kayla’s who witnessed the shooting, delivered a victim impact statement that resonated deeply: “I feel like I’m trapped in a coma that I can’t wake up from. Losing Kayla changed every part of my life.”
