In a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 case that has left a community reeling, a Kentucky teenager has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal beating of his grandmother, a crime he recorded himself committing. The tragic incident unfolded on October 8, 2024, when police responded to an urgent 911 call reporting an assault at a Covington home.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered 74-year-old Cheri Oliver with severe head injuries. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The perpetrator, Wyatt Testerman, then 18, was taken into custody without resistance.
In May, Testerman entered a guilty but mentally ill plea regarding the fatal attack, leading to his sentencing on July 7, where he received a life sentence. He will be eligible for parole in 20 years. Reports indicate that Testerman claimed he was experiencing 𝒹𝓇𝓊𝑔-induced psychosis during the assault, having been released from a hospital after an LSD overdose shortly before the incident. He had been living with his grandmother, who, according to family, was delighted to have him around to assist with errands and medical appointments.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders revealed that a disturbing video recorded by Testerman on Oliver’s phone played a crucial role in the prosecution’s case. Sanders described the act as “nothing short of animalistic,” highlighting the severity of the crime.
Despite his defense’s claims, prosecutors argued that 𝒹𝓇𝓊𝑔-induced psychosis does not qualify for an insanity defense since the substances were voluntarily consumed. During his sentencing, Testerman expressed remorse, stating, “My grandma was one of the nicest, most caring people who ever walked the earth… I thought my sweet little grandma was a true danger.” He pleaded for forgiveness from his family, acknowledging the horror of his actions.
Cheri Oliver was remembered fondly in an online obituary for her dedication to helping others, notably through her volunteer work with a local women’s shelter and Al-Anon, an organization focused on supporting those affected by substance 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮.
