In a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 turn of events, authorities in Athens, Ohio, have rescued 16 children from a home described as having “horrific” living conditions. Four adults, reportedly family members of the children, now face serious charges of child endangerment following a search warrant executed on June 30.
The children, aged between 1 and 18, were found in dire circumstances, with many requiring immediate medical attention. Some were even airlifted to trauma centers due to the severity of their conditions, according to local news reports. The adults charged include 73-year-old Gary Siders Sr., 36-year-old Gary Siders Jr., 67-year-old Christina Siders, and 33-year-old Elizabeth Siders, each facing 17 counts of child endangerment—one for each child and an additional charge for serious physical harm.
During a press conference, Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson expressed his outrage, stating, “This is pure evil,” while clarifying that human trafficking was not involved in this case. The suspects, identified as the parents and grandparents of the children, all pleaded not guilty during their arraignment on July 1, with bond set at $300,000 for each.
The conditions within the home were so alarming that a second search warrant was issued, as investigators deemed the environment potentially unsafe for entry. Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described the scene as “horrific,” echoing the gravity of the situation.
Neighbors were reportedly unaware of the children living in the house, which is listed as a 1,336-square-foot property owned by the trustee of a deceased woman. Reports indicate that the family had resided there for four years, with the children often confined to a single room. Attorney General Wilson noted that one of the older children, an 18-year-old, could not even spell her own name, highlighting the alarming neglect they faced.
None of the children were enrolled in school, and the 18-year-old is included in the child endangerment charges due to developmental factors. All 16 children are now in temporary custody as the investigation continues, with the possibility of further charges looming.
