[NEW JERSEY TRAGEDY] 71-Year-Old Father Strangles Nonverbal Disabled Daughter Over Wet Bed

A deeply sorrowful family tragedy has unfolded in Woodbury, Gloucester County, New Jersey, where a 71-year-old father has been charged with first-degree murder following the strangulation death of his biologically disabled adult daughter. The suspect in the case has been identified as Dennis J. Hall, and the victim is 40-year-old Devin Hall. The incident has profoundly shaken the local community, not only due to the gravity of the crime but also because of the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the family.

According to official information from the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, the situation first came to light on June 11 when Dennis J. Hall personally dialed the emergency 911 hotline. Over the phone, the elderly man admitted to dispatchers that he had just strangled his daughter. As soon as first responders and police officers arrived at the scene, Dennis once again confessed to his criminal actions without any attempt to conceal them. A witness at the residence also stated that the suspect had admitted to the act directly to them before making the 911 call. Dennis was immediately arrested at the scene and initially charged with attempted murder.

Devin Hall was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but due to the severity of her injuries, she tragically passed away the following day. Following an autopsy, medical examiners concluded that the official cause of death was manual asphyxia and determined the manner of death to be a homicide. Consequently, the prosecutor’s office swiftly upgraded Dennis J. Hall’s charge to first-degree murder.

According to television station WLS-TV, Devin Hall was a vulnerable individual who was nonverbal, suffered from multiple severe disabilities from birth, and was entirely reliant on a wheelchair. Sharing her immense shock with the media, Jan Hall—the suspect’s wife and the victim’s mother—revealed that her husband woke her up that morning solely to inform her of what he had done to their daughter. She tearfully disclosed that Dennis had been struggling with severe depression and undergoing various mental health issues over the past year.

Jan Hall shared her profound grief, saying, “I would just like him to tell me why he did it. He had an opportunity to come in and get me when he went in there and she had wet the bed. He could’ve came and woke me up. And I could’ve helped him.”

In her obituary, Devin Hall was beautifully remembered as “an inspiration to others, and she touched many with her beauty, gentle kindness, and innocent presence.” Despite her severe physical limitations, Devin loved life; she thoroughly enjoyed traveling, loved listening to the country music of Toby Keith, and was happiest when being strolled on long walks by her devoted mother.

If convicted of the upgraded charges, Dennis J. Hall faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspect currently remains behind bars pending the state’s motion for pretrial detention.
