Former corrections officer sentenced to 150 years for killing wife, 14-year-old daughter

In a heartbreaking case that has shaken the Anchorage community, a former corrections officer has been sentenced to an astounding 150 years in prison for the tragic murders of his wife and teenage daughter. Jalonni Blackshear, 39, was found guilty of first- and second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of 35-year-old Raechyl Blackshear and their 14-year-old daughter, Jayla, in April 2022.

The chilling events began in March 2022 when Jayla reportedly disclosed that she had been sexually abused, though she did not reveal the identity of her abuser. This disclosure led her father, Jalonni, to become a suspect. In a troubling turn of events, he allegedly urged Raechyl to accompany Jayla to the police station to retract her statement. Tragically, after they visited the station on April 3, 2022, they vanished without a trace.

Days later, on April 15, 2022, concerns grew when Raechyl missed an appointment, prompting police to conduct a welfare check at their home. What they discovered was devastating: both Raechyl and Jayla were found shot to death in a bedroom. According to court documents, Jalonni is believed to have committed the murders on April 4, 2022.

Investigators uncovered that he fled Alaska just days later, on April 6, taking the victims’ phones with him and allegedly sending messages pretending to be them. Before his departure, he submitted a resignation letter to the Alaska Department of Corrections. Authorities managed to track the phones, leading to his capture in New York.

On May 6, 2022, Jalonni was indicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder and sexual 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 of a minor. Following a plea deal on January 27, he admitted guilt to first-degree murder for Raechyl’s death and second-degree murder for Jayla’s, resulting in a sentence of 75 years for each count, to be served consecutively.

During the sentencing, Anchorage Superior Court Judge Garton emphasized the disturbing nature of Jalonni’s control over his family, suggesting that his daughter’s report of 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 led him to commit these unspeakable acts against both her and her mother. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, many are left wondering how such a horrific situation could unfold in their midst.
