SHREVEPORT, Louisiana — A newly graduated police officer was shot and killed outside a residential property while preparing to begin her scheduled shift, law enforcement officials confirmed.
The incident occurred as Officer Chateri Payne, dressed in her full uniform, was entering her personal vehicle to commute to work. Unprovoked gunfire erupted, striking Officer Payne multiple times. Emergency medical responders rushed to the scene, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
A comprehensive criminal investigation subsequently led to the arrest of three individuals, including Officer Payne’s boyfriend and two accomplices. All three suspects were formally charged with second-degree murder. Following judicial proceedings, her boyfriend was convicted and received a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence for second-degree murder. The court additionally issued a consecutive 30-year sentence for conspiracy to commit second-degree murder.
Officer Payne had successfully graduated from the police academy only three months prior to her death. She was highly regarded by peers and department leadership for her early commitment to public service and the great promise she demonstrated as a young law enforcement professional. She is survived by her young daughter and her mother.
The Shreveport Police Department honored her memory in a formal statement, emphasizing that her legacy of dedication, courage, and ultimate sacrifice will always be remembered by the agency and the local community. The legal cases against the remaining accomplices are being managed by local prosecutors.
