”

Brandon’s voice cracked. “She won’t answer. ”

Legal replied instantly: “No. She followed every protocol. Her exit was flawless. It’s all in writing.
We were just sloppy. ”
“Not sloppy,” Leonard said. “Stupid. ” He turned to Brandon.
“Tried to look clever, and you lost the system. ”

Across the street, Jessica closed her laptop, dropped a twenty on the table, and stepped out into the cold morning air. Her phone stayed off. In her bag were three job offers from competitors who’d heard whispers about what had happened—all with double her salary and teams that didn’t host podcasts. She didn’t smile.
