A retired middle school principal has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars after admitting he killed his wife with a hammer—because he believed she was 𝒸𝒽𝑒𝒶𝓉𝒾𝓃𝑔 on him.
On July 17, 79-year-old Terry Ogle learned his fate in an Indianapolis courtroom. Court documents show he was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, a charge that stems from what the judge described as a crime committed in “sudden heat.” The deadly attack happened back on January 17, 2025.
According to reports, Ogle called 911 that morning and told dispatchers, “The nature of the emergency is that there’s been some violence…I did it. She’s deceased. Yeah, she’s been down for a while.
It’s too late.” When officers arrived, they found Ogle with self-inflicted cuts to his wrists. His wife, 76-year-old Mary Ogle, was dead from blunt force trauma—beaten with a hammer, according to authorities.
Before being taken into custody, Ogle reportedly texted his daughter to confess what he had done. While being treated at the hospital, he told investigators he “just lost it” because he suspected Mary was having an 𝒶𝒻𝒻𝒶𝒾𝓇.
The couple had both worked for the Indianapolis Public School system, retiring in 2006. Terry Ogle was a middle school principal, and Mary was a teacher. Neighbors told local media they were often seen walking hand in hand through the neighborhood—a stark contrast to the violence that would eventually take her life.
In April, Ogle’s legal team waived his right to a jury trial, leading to a bench trial where he was convicted. He received credit for 547 days already served, meaning he could spend about 13 more years in prison.
Mary Ogle’s obituary painted a very different picture of the woman behind the tragedy. It described her as “a fierce advocate for social justice” who spent countless hours volunteering and serving her community.
