Experts now say the beloved Victorian ideal of “safe as houses” was a deadly illusion, as a wave of new gadgets and products turned homes into toxic traps. The documentary “Hidden Killers” exposes how the pursuit of comfort and status led to widespread illness and death, with arsenic-tainted green wallpaper being one of the most insidious threats.

The Victorians cherished the home as a domestic haven, coining the phrase “safe as houses.” But this age of invention brought products that were not just health hazards—they were killers. In the bedroom, beauty products contained harmful toxins.
In the nursery, factory-made toys were coated with lead. And for the first time, stoves heated entire houses, but many exploded. Now, with the aid of modern science, investigators are uncovering these domestic assassins.
The houses were disgusting, and many of these things undoubtedly killed countless children.
The second half of the 19th century saw cities explode to house the booming middle classes. In just over 50 years, their number grew from 2. 5 million to over 9 million.
These new urban middle classes took immense pride in their homes, spending money to make them cozy havens of comfort. They filled their rooms with things that made the house a home, inspired by the Great Exhibition of 1851, which showcased the latest gadgets and consumer goods. The phrase “standard of living” appeared for the first time, measuring how good your life was by how many objects you possessed.
But while Victorians fretted about abstract notions of morality and good taste, they were oblivious to the real dangers. Every room in the Victorian home was filled with hidden killers. One of the most dangerous places was the drawing room.
The Victorians rejected the restraint of 18th-century classicism, wanting clutter, color, and accessories. One thing that indicated both good taste and status was wallpaper—the richer the pattern and the darker the color, the better. With the introduction of gas lighting, there was enough light to enjoy intense color on walls, sparking a wallpaper craze.
Manuals like “Cassell’s Household Guide” told Victorians which patterns to buy, influencing a massive market. Wallpaper sales shot up from 1 million pieces a year in 1834 to 32 million by 1874. A particularly brilliant green known as Scheele’s green was all the rage.
It was used in everything from carpets to candles to children’s toys, but most of all in industrial quantities in wallpaper. As wallpaper sales escalated, so did reports of unexplained deaths and illnesses. The magic ingredient giving wallpaper its rich green hue was arsenic.
Modern science can prove Victorian wallpaper contained arsenic. Using a portable XRF instrument, researchers found large amounts of copper and arsenic in samples. The salts used in the pigment are copper arsenite.
The immediate effects of arsenic poisoning include pain, swelling of the esophagus, dry throat, difficulty swallowing, agonizing abdominal pains, vomiting, and diarrhea. People would die, and death was said to be a relief because it was such an agonizing way to go. Newspaper headlines reported mysterious illnesses and deaths linked to arsenic.
One case involved a six-month-old child who died after chewing on a piece of emerald green wallpaper. But even if you didn’t eat the wallpaper, you weren’t safe. Poisonous fumes infiltrated the very air people breathed due to chemical reactions.
The surface of the wallpaper could produce arsenical dust. In damp Victorian houses, fungal growth could volatilize arsenic salts into highly toxic gases. These things were billowing out arsenic in homes where windows were hardly ever opened because of smog.
Families sat in a lovely fog of arsenic, thinking they were in a perfect healthy home.
Doctors began to question the use of arsenic in wallpaper as mystery deaths accumulated. The Lancet took up the cause, stating there was good reason to believe a large amount of sickness and mortality among all classes was attributable to arsenic in wallpaper. In 1856, a couple in Birmingham reported inflamed eyes, headaches, and sore throats.
Even their pet parrot was drooping. They went on holiday to the seaside, and symptoms disappeared. They suspected their newly applied bright green wallpaper.
Dr. Heinz wondered if it was responsible.
People went to the seaside and took the waters, effectively moving out of a toxic environment into fresh air. The amount of arsenic in a Victorian drawing room was astounding. A room with 100 square meters of surface area could contain up to 2.
5 kilograms of arsenic. Dr. Heinz became an outspoken critic.
In Germany, arsenical wallpapers had been banned, but not in the UK. Manufacturers didn’t want people to think there was anything wrong, and some offered to eat the wallpaper to prove it was safe.
William Morris, one of Britain’s most celebrated wallpaper designers and a leading light of the Arts and Crafts movement, was also a director of the biggest arsenic-producing mine in the world. He made money from arsenic while championing handicraft. There was enough arsenic from that mine to 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 the entire planet and every creature on earth.
When a customer complained that Morris’s wallpaper was poisoning his family, Morris said it was “witch fever.” He claimed the doctors were talking mumbo-jumbo.
But evidence became impossible to deny. One tipping point was when Queen Victoria herself had Scheele’s green wallpaper. A diplomat who stayed overnight fell ill and died, effectively poisoned by arsenic in the wallpaper.
The papers covered it extensively. That step change made people think about regulation. Unbelievably, arsenic in wallpaper was never officially banned.
As consumers understood the danger, they stopped buying these wallpapers, forcing manufacturers to advertise as arsenic-free. By 1872, even the star guides had switched to safer printing. But we will never know how many died a slow death from arsenic.
The Victorian ideal of domesticity cast the lady of the house as the “angel of the house.” Women were encouraged to make the home a reassuring sanctuary. But the pursuit of this feminine ideal wasn’t safe.
In the bedroom, lurking in many beautifying products were harmful toxins. Corsets kept everything under control, representing self-reserve. But they became potential killers due to a small technological advance: the metal eyelet.
It allowed women to tightly lace without fabric tearing, leading to extreme tight lacing.
Sarah Nicol, who looks after one of the biggest corset collections, explained that some women wore corsets day and night to train their bodies. The effects on the body were severe: the liver gets squashed upwards, with ridges on the surface from ribs, and the stomach pushed downwards. A pregnancy corset from 1885 shows women wore them even while pregnant.
Many husbands complained about their baby’s head being shaped, but some women continued. After pregnancy, prolapse of the uterus was a problem due to weakened pelvic floor muscles and tight corsets increasing abdominal pressure.
In experiments using sport science equipment, the effect of a corset on breathing was measured. At rest, breathing rate increased from 14 breaths per minute without corset to 23-24 with it. During exercise, tidal volume dropped by 200-300 ml per breath.
The chronic underperfusion of air predisposed women to infections like pneumonia. Stories survive of ribs breaking and piercing the lung, which could be fatal. As the century wore on, the corset became the focus of debate.
The Rational Dress Society, established in 1881, protested any fashion that deforms the figure, impedes movement, or injures health.
By the 1890s, some manufacturers responded to demands for looser clothing. But the temptation to conform to an ideal of beauty remains. Why did women wear corsets?
Because it was psychologically rewarding, even if physically it took a toll. The idea of the S-shaped figure still holds us in thrall. We cannot look back and say “weren’t they silly” without acknowledging we are not that far away.
The kitchen was another minefield. Gas appliances and gadgets were new and dangerous. People were untrained in how to use them.
By the mid-1870s, Victorians were piping gas into homes. Gas lighting was a massive innovation, but coal gas, wood gas, and water gas were highly poisonous and often odorless. People would keel over without warning.
Newspapers from the Manchester Evening News to the Western Gazette were full of stories of people dying horribly. Five boys suffocated in a loft. A lady was found dead with her infant in a bedroom due to a gas leak.
Gas companies even advertised that gas was good for people and safe to walk into a room full of it with a naked light. Rivalry led to cost-cutting, with companies reducing pressure at night, causing gas to seep into homes. The speed of change was breathtaking, but there was neither time nor will to test products.
Gas central heating used sealed systems with huge pressure. Boilers could explode without warning. The pressure inside was phenomenal, and accidents were inevitable.
Gas and cast iron hadn’t been used in this way before, and flaws in casting caused problems.
Stoves also posed dangers. Open systems with coal and massive flues provided superb ventilation. When enclosed into sealed containers, pressure and smoke became problems.
Kitchens became smoky, leading to suffocation. Sealed units used for boiling water had no release valves and exploded like small time bombs. In the late Victorian era, electricity gradually came into play, but it was also dangerous when mixed with gas.
Gas cookers left on, corroded joints, and electric lights created explosions. It wasn’t until 1923 that safety regulations were brought in.
But it was the nursery where the greatest hidden killer lurked. Despite all progress, 154,000 infants under one year died annually between 1880 and 1890. Manufacturers poured goods for children into shops.
Toys were the problem. Anything colored or pigmented had high levels of toxic metals. White objects contained large levels of lead.
Lead is very poisonous, and even tiny amounts are detrimental, especially to developing children. Lead was used for soldiers and painting toys. Children would put toys in their mouths, and lead is not unpleasant, so it didn’t put them off.
The Victorians knew lead was poisonous since Roman times, but they used it because it was the best preserver of wood. They didn’t realize its poison could transfer from a toy into a child’s body. Lead poisoning caused developmental abnormalities and behavioral problems that might have been put down to temper tantrums or attention deficit disorder.
Lead was ubiquitous in the Victorian house. A piece of woodwork tested showed 3000 ppm of lead. Lead poisoning caused anemia and a gray pallor, with Burton’s lines—a blue-gray line at the base of the gums—as a sign.
Despite evidence, the government did nothing. It wasn’t until the 1920s that white lead was banned in indoor paint in some countries, but not Britain. Amazingly, it wasn’t until the 1970s—more than 100 years after the problem was identified—that the British government passed legislation to control lead content in household paint.
Even today, lead paint in old houses still poses a risk.
The greatest hidden killer was baby feeding bottles. Infant mortality rates were terrifyingly high, with 15% of babies dying in their first year. Often the cause was unexpected: mother’s little helper, the baby bottle.
Traditional ideas around breastfeeding clashed with new scientific approaches. Queen Victoria didn’t breastfeed; it was something aristocratic women didn’t do, giving the job to wet nurses. Mrs.
Beeton’s household guide gave chapters on baby care, suggesting bottle feeding or “rearing by hand.” Her perceived support and marketing of baby bottles put pressure on women to abandon breastfeeding.
The Victorian baby bottle had a bend on the side that was difficult to clean, with porous rubber and animal skin nipples that didn’t get washed for two or three weeks. Dr. Matthew Averson, a microbiologist, conducted an experiment contaminating a piece of porous cork and non-porous plastic with bacteria found in Victorian times.
After a quick wash and incubation, the cork had much denser bacterial growth. The porous material retained bacteria even after washing, meaning new milk would become contaminated. In Victorian Britain, diseases like dysentery and typhoid were common, passed on through dirty water.
For a small baby, dehydration from diarrhea could lead to death within 48 hours.
The lack of knowledge about germ transmission meant bottle-fed children were more at risk. Bacteria from the mouth and upper respiratory tract could be inhaled into the lungs, causing pneumonia—the biggest cause of death in babies. The dirty, bacteria-ridden object went straight into the mouths of infants.
These things undoubtedly killed many children. Doctors eventually understood the dangers, and in 1894, the double-ended feeder bottle was introduced with a teat at one end and a valve at the other, easy to clean. But the old dangerous bottles sold well into the 20th century.
The hidden killers—poisonous wallpaper, killer corsets, dangerous paint, exploding stoves, and infested baby bottles—damaged the Victorian ideal of a safe home. Yet this was an extraordinary age of innovation, even if there was a price to pay. History is a case of two steps forward and one step back.
Although progress was not without sacrifice, we still live in their houses and benefit from their legacy. We may think we are overregulated today, but when we look at what things were like just over 100 years ago, we should be grateful that the Victorians not only pioneered new products but also protections against them. It makes us wonder what we are oblivious to today.
