A flat tire repair turned deadly after a price dispute spiraled out of control, leaving one man dead and another behind bars. Police say what started as a simple roadside favor ended in gunfire at an Indianapolis gas station.
According to court documents released by WXIN, the trouble began on May 5 when a group of people driving hit a pothole and pulled into a gas station looking for help. Reports say 21-year-old Izaak Garcia offered to change their flat tire for $10.
But then Garcia reportedly changed his mind, telling the group the price would be $30 instead. That shift in cost allegedly sparked a heated argument.
Witnesses told police that Darious Averitte was upset about the new price and is accused of firing the first shots. Sources claim Garcia fired back as he was falling to the ground. Garcia later died at the hospital.
Averitte, also wounded in the exchange, reportedly got into the group’s car and was driven away. The vehicle broke down a short distance later, where authorities found Averitte bleeding, according to reports.
On July 12, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced that Averitte had been arrested on June 26. A murder warrant was issued after detectives reportedly identified him as the suspect, even though he was injured during the incident.
Averitte is now being held without bond, according to KRCR.
