In a heartbreaking case that has shocked the community, a Flint Township couple faces serious charges after the tragic death of their 7-year-old son, who weighed an astonishing 255 pounds at the time of his passing. Damien and Jessica O’Brien, aged 40 and 41, have been charged with second-degree murder, torture, and child 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮.
The investigation into the O’Briens began on November 4, 2025, when emergency responders were called to their home due to reports of a child struggling to breathe. Upon arrival, paramedics described the living conditions as “horrific,” suggesting a severe hoarding situation, according to Genesee County prosecutor David Leyton.
Tragically, the couple’s son, Casper O’Brien, was found immobile and later died that evening from dilated cardiomyopathy, with morbid obesity cited as a contributing factor. Reports indicate that a healthy weight for a child of Casper’s age and height would typically range from 50 to 73 pounds.
Prosecutor Leyton stated that the allegations point to a pattern of neglect and 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮, claiming that Casper was not provided with proper nutrition and medical care, despite the family having health insurance. Disturbingly, while the O’Briens reportedly took their dog to the vet, they failed to seek medical attention for their son, who was nonverbal and unable to advocate for himself.
Further investigations revealed that Casper’s diet primarily consisted of unhealthy foods like chips and fries, and he was found with bed sores at the time of his death. In a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 twist, the couple has also been charged with second-degree child 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 concerning their 5-year-old daughter, who was reportedly found in distressing conditions outside the home.
An obituary for Casper described him as a “bright, loving young boy whose joyful spirit touched everyone around him,” highlighting the profound loss felt by those who knew him.
The O’Briens were charged on June 23 and are currently being held without bond. If convicted, they could face life sentences.
