Love Exploring has taken an 80-year journey back in time in America, compiling memorable and nostalgic photographs of the country from the 1940s to 2020.
The 1940s: America Rises to New Heights. In the early 1940s, after a decade devastated by the Great Depression, things in America began to improve. The Boeing 307, the first aircraft with a pressurized cabin, entered service with Pan Am in 1940. Pictured is a Boeing 307 flying over snow-covered Mount Rainier.
In 1941, the surprise Japanese attack on US naval bases, including Pearl Harbor, forced the country into conflict. The first half of the 1940s was dominated by wars. Pictured are two troop carriers, formerly passenger ships, docked on the Hudson River in New York.
American cities have been and continue to be constantly changing. New York City in the 1940s saw the emergence of skyscrapers.
The natural landscape of America has also changed over the years. American national parks are protected by the National Park Service, established under President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Among them is Great Smoky Mountains National Park, established in 1940. The photo shows the national park’s inauguration ceremony.
The 1950s: Rebuilding after the war. During the 1950s, America experienced a post-war period, and for many, this decade represented a time of progress, peace, and prosperity. The “peaceful” atmosphere can be felt in the beautiful photo above, taken in the early 1950s, depicting people sunbathing and swimming on a beach in Santa Monica, California.
American infrastructure, including houses, roads, and rail services, underwent significant transformations in the 1950s. The photo shows passengers waiting to board a train in Oakland, California.
Streetcars also appeared in San Francisco, California in the 1950s. However, some people still preferred traditional modes of transportation. The photo shows a San Francisco City Railroad streetcar carrying passengers.
Today, it’s not uncommon to see McDonald’s famous “Golden Dome” logo. Therefore, it’s hard to believe that this brand only existed in the 1950s. Although the brand opened its first restaurant in the 1940s, it wasn’t until 1955, when businessman Ray Kroc established the first franchise, that the fast-food chain began to take on its modern form. McDonald’s wasn’t one of the iconic American landmarks in the 1950s. In 1955, Walt Disney opened the first theme park – Disneyland in Anaheim, California. In the photo, Walt Disney is speaking at the opening ceremony.
The 1960s: The post-war resurgence continued into the 1960s. During this decade, Florida became a fantastic vacation destination and a haven for leisure, with luxurious hotels, resorts, and long stretches of white sandy beaches. The photo shows people sunbathing on Miami Beach in South Florida.
The 1960s also saw peak events in the civil rights movement. At the beginning of the decade, African American civil rights activists and their allies rode public buses through the American South. This photo shows civil rights activists sitting at a bus stop in Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, in 1961.
Highways were improved and industry flourished. Automobiles in the US developed significantly in the 1950s, and by the 1960s, more Americans were traveling on highways than ever before.
By the 1970s, Florida had changed even more. Walt Disney World Resort opened the Magic Kingdom theme park in October 1971, and this location has been a cornerstone of the Sunshine State’s tourism industry ever since.
In the 1970s, New York City underwent significant changes. New York City experienced a major transformation with the construction of the World Trade Center complex. The complex included the iconic Twin Towers (destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks) and a host of smaller buildings. After years of planning and construction, the towering structures were finally completed in the early 1970s.
By the 1980s, Florida continued its major transformation with the opening of Epcot, a new theme park. At Walt Disney World Resort, Epcot opened in 1982, and Spaceship Earth, a giant geodesic globe, was the park’s biggest tourist attraction.
The 1990s: A new turning point for Las Vegas. Las Vegas in the 1990s was a complete transformation from the 1950s. A number of major hotels opened during this decade, such as the Luxor, New York-New York, and the Bellagio, famous for its fountain shows. This photo was taken on the opening night of the Bellagio hotel in 1998.
The 2000s: America entered a new millennium. Brilliant fireworks lit up the sky, and people gathered in cities from New York City and Los Angeles to Houston, Texas, to welcome the new millennium.
The terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001, shook the United States. The lives of many Americans changed in the years that followed. After the attacks, the US tightened security at airports. The photo above shows security forces at Salt Lake City International Airport in Utah in 2001.
The 2010s saw the formation of a movement that defined the era. The Black Lives Matter movement began in 2013, after George Zimmerman was acquitted of murdering African American high school student Trayvon Martin. Protests took place in cities across the United States, demanding justice and freedom for the Black community. The photo above shows a march in Oakland, California in 2014. This movement became a focal point again in 2020, after African American man George Floyd was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis.
The 2020s: Empty streets. As the Covid-19 pandemic erupted, much of the United States imposed stay-at-home orders. Bustling American cities transformed into “ghost towns” almost overnight. The photo above, taken in May 2020 in New York City’s Times Square, is virtually deserted.
