A federal judge has cleared the way for Memphis rapper Big 30, whose real name is Rodney Wright Jr., to be released from federal custody under strict conditions, a decision that has drawn significant attention due to its timing and the serious allegations he faces. Big 30 is charged in connection with a kidnapping and robbery case targeting fellow rapper Gucci Mane, with prosecutors alleging he played a central role in the incident at a recording studio in Dallas, Texas.
On April 6, Big 30 appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Annie Kristoff in the Western District of Tennessee, where the judge denied the government’s request to keep him detained. Instead, Judge Kristoff ordered his release on a $100,000 bond, secured by 10 percent, with conditions including home detention, a curfew, location monitoring, and travel restrictions. However, the government’s appeal placed a short stay on that order, delaying his release until the higher court could rule.
After reviewing the case, the court decided that the government did not provide sufficient proof that Big 30 is a danger to the community or a flight risk. The ruling noted that Big 30, who is 26 years old, lives with his father, and has four children he supports through his work as a recording artist with NLS Entertainment, has a limited criminal history. The allegations against Big 30 stem from an incident where prosecutors claim he retrieved a bag containing firearms, recorded the forced signing of contract release paperwork, and blocked a door to prevent victims from leaving the studio. Despite these claims, the court stated that the government lacked clear and convincing evidence to prove he was armed during the incident. The judge’s decision emphasized that while the charges are serious, the legal factors favored his release under the set conditions.
The court’s order removed the stay on the release, allowing Big 30 to post bond and leave custody, though he remains under tight supervision with an ankle monitor and home detention.
